The method has evolved from traditional photoelastic techniques to modern digital implementations, harnessing high-resolution imaging and sophisticated computational analysis.

The history of astronomical photoelastic polarimeters is briefly outlined. A description is given of a system of this type which has been in continuous use at Pine Mountain Observatory for six years.
