Pyrolysis, or heating in the absence of oxygen, is one method that is often used. The metal parts turn into char and the plastic (polymer) components turn into gas and liquid.
In the meantime, pyrolysis is being used now, with one report estimating the market for pyrolysis plants at US$40 million in 2024 and predicting it to grow to $1.2 billion by 2033.
Pyrolysis? Yes, it’s a technology in which you heat up a material to a high temperature, without adding oxygen. What happens is that the material does not burn, but disintegrates at molecular level.
