Gulling’s niece, Susie Emmelman, recalled the last time she saw him, in early December. Uncle Nick was due to return to the doctor the next day, and he was anxious, she said.

When Gulling finally retired from the sheriff’s department in 2007, some 400 people turned out to the celebratory “Pick Nick” — a nod to Gulling’s longtime campaign slogan.

Gulling is a former Southeast Polk Teacher of the Year winner and a past nominee for the Iowa Teacher of the Year award. Throughout her career she has taught more than 1,000 students.

Dr. Gulling, 59, of St. Charles, a member of the DuPage Medical Group in Glen Ellyn, died Saturday, Sept. 8, in Central DuPage Hospital of complications related to the stroke.
