Move over, restaurant menus. California Gov. Gavin Newsom just used a QR code as an official memo to announce he signed a bill into law.

Democratic state Sen. Aisha Wahab, who introduced the bill, said it’s “about fairness and equity in the workplace.”

Certain synthetic food dyes are linked to behavioral issues in kids. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law to ban them in school snacks by 2028.

Newsom also signed a handful of bills developed using recommendations from the state’s reparations task force.

The signing comes a month after lawmakers let a pair of bills die that would have created a state reparations agency and a fund for it to use.

What you need to know: Governor Newsom signed eight bills into law today to help protect victims of domestic abuse and violence, including by creating a new victims’ services fund maintained by penalties from white-collar crimes and expanding the ability of victims to access restraining orders.

The common food dyes — blue 1, blue 2, green 3, red 40, yellow 5 and yellow 6 — have been linked to developmental and behavioral harms in children, according to the California Environmental Protection Agency.
