Reclamation returns the mine to its pre-mining conditions and releases the land for reuse. The coal mine near Colstrip, Mont. was first permitted in 1984 and ceased mining in the early 2000’s.

Together, the withdrawals apply to about 3,600 acres of the Zortman-Landusky Mine reclamation area. These acres were originally withdrawn to protect the reclamation area in October 2000.

PELLA, Iowa — A portion of the Pella Wildlife Area is closed while crews work to reclaim a mine. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says this affects the north half of the reclamation area.

The Pella Wildlife Area is being closed to the public while the state continues its massive environmental reclamation project, expected to last through end of 2025.
