That idea of a “common purpose” President Eisenhower referenced is the most vital part of his proclamation. Our veterans — past, present, and future — serve our country with a common purpose.

The ideals it represents — and the recipients who earned it — are a reminder of our common purpose as a nation and of what can be accomplished when individuals look beyond themselves.
