The consumer-confidence index rose to 97.2 in July from a revised 95.2 in the prior month, the Conference Board said Tuesday. Confidence has stabilized after dropping to 85.7 in April. Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal had forecast the index to rise to 95.4 in July from 93 in June

U.S. consumer confidence improved less than expected in July and households' perceptions of current job availability were the weakest in nearly 4-1/2 years, consistent with easing labor market conditions.

New numbers show Americans have a slightly more positive outlook on the economy. The Consumer Confidence Index rose two points in July compared to June. CBS News MoneyWatch correspondent Kelly O'Grady has the details.
